The SSI Altitude Diving program is a specialty course that prepares divers for safe diving at elevations above 1000 feet (300 meters). It teaches divers how to plan dives at altitude, understanding the adjustments needed to calculate bottom time, decompression stops, and other aspects of dive planning. This course is designed to be a one-night course with a certified instructor.

Key aspects of the SSI Altitude Diving program include:

  • Understanding the effects of altitude:

    Divers learn how altitude impacts the density of the air and how this affects their breathing and decompression. 

  • Dive planning at altitude:

    The course covers techniques for calculating bottom time, decompression stops, and using dive computer settings for altitude dives. 

  • Using dive computers:

    Divers learn how to properly set and use dive computers for altitude diving, including the use of altitude correction settings. 

  • Practical application:

    The course includes in-water training to practice the skills and techniques learned in the classroom. 

    Prerequisites for the SSI Altitude Diving program:

  • Minimum age: 10 years old.
  • Certification level: Must hold a Referral Diver certification (or above) from a recognized training agency.
